The National Universities Commission (NUC) has become aware of at least 58 illegal universities or satellite campuses operating in Nigeria, and warns that certificates received from such establishments will be identified for the purposes of compulsory one-year national service, employment and further study.
The acting executive secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, revealed this on Wednesday in an interview with Channels Television in Abuja, stating that some arrests were made in connection with the fake institutions.
Maiyaki said the Department of State Services (DSS) was involved in the clampdown on the illegal institutions and their promoters.
The NUC secretary suggested parents and guardians to consult the commission to know about legal and illegal universities in Nigeria so that their children and wards are not victimized.
The revelations followed the suspension of degree certificates from two francophone West African countries and other countries after an undercover journalist detailed how he acquired a degree from a university in the neighbouring Benin Republic under two months and was subsequently deployed for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
In addition, in a public announcement through the Commission signed through the NUC’s acting executive secretary, listing the establishments, Maiyaki said that in addition to their closure, nine other establishments/campuses, which he described as “diploma factories,” were in the closure procedure. Additional investigations and/or ongoing legal action.
The Commission noted that the purpose of these moves was to prosecute homeowners and the illegal fees and fees imposed on subscribers.
“For the avoidance of doubt, anyone who attends or obtains a certificate from one of these illegal establishments does so at their own risk.
“Certificates received from those resources will be identified for NYSC purposes, employment, and further education,” Maiyaki said.
