The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) revealed that the country has effectively vaccinated 41,235,148 of its eligible population with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine as of August 23, 2022.
This represented 36. 9% of the country’s eligible population.
Also yesterday, the federal government announced that it had begun the implementation of a memorandum of understanding with the classical leaders of the southwest geopolitical zone as part of the measures for the number one health centers for the population.
This was just as Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) revealed that the country had so far recorded 220 cases of monkeypox and four patients in 29 states.
Speaking at the first quarterly meeting of the Southwest Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Health Care (SWTLC) held in Abuja, NPHCDA Executive Director Dr Faisal Shuaib said: “As of 23 August 2022, Nigeria has effectively vaccinated 41,235,148 of its eligible population with the first dose and this represents 36. 9% of its eligible population.
He also said that the number of other eligible people who had been fully vaccinated recently stood at 29,052,850, adding that the proportion of the general eligible population that had been fully vaccinated in Nigeria was 26%.
Regarding the MoU, he said expectations were that the committee would “adopt an operational consultant for members’ PHC systems and interventions (vaccination against COVID-19, polio, measles, yellow fever, rotavirus, all other immunization, maternal, neonatal, and child nutrition regimens) in the spaces of example, networking, mobilization, and awareness-raising, resource mobilization and follow-up.
While welcoming the classical leaders, he said that a memorandum of understanding will also be signed with the classical leaders of the southeast and south-south geographical spaces before the end of the year.
He said the agency, in collaboration with donors and progression partners, has acquired new equipment and resources to prevent the importation of wild poliovirus into the country.
Earlier, Health Minister Dr. Osagie Ehanire said the goal of the MoU is for the number one delivery of fitness care and assistance to serve as a platform for the delivery of medicines and vaccines for the immunization regimen across the country.
“So the whole focus is on delivering number one physical care and we take this opportunity to bring the actual parents together with the federal government in that direction,” he added.
The minister, who lamented that the country’s poor fitness rates have a cause for embarrassment, said that the purpose of reversing the trend is being achieved from yesterday’s assembly with the royal parents.
“I that this assembly aims to launch the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on the systematic engagement of classical leaders in the South-West Zone between the federal government through the NPHCDA and our esteemed royal fathers.
“This is a step in the right direction. I would like to congratulate Their Majesties for agreeing to marry the government in delivering the number one physical care and for their hobby and commitment to ensuring the well-being of Nigerians, especially the other people of the southwest area,” he said.
While justifying synergy with classical leaders, Ehanire saw collaboration as an opportunity to drive people’s progress and well-being from the grassroots.
“We are leveraging our people’s respect for culture and culture, and the influence of our classical leaders, for people’s fitness and well-being.
“The federal government, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, holds our classic establishment in high regard, so this partnership that we are consolidating is the fulfillment of that highest esteem and respect.
“Our classic establishment is a must for everything we do in all sectors, especially in fitness and the government is aware that on its own it cannot protect the fitness of others well without that of our real parents. “
“Achieving prestige free of wild polio by 2020 would not have been imaginable without the help of classic leaders across the country.
“I look forward for this Committee to step up our networking efforts and advocate to our political leaders at every degree for the unquantifiable benefits of making an investment in the fitness sector, especially in number one fitness care, which is closest to the people. “.
The chairman of the Southwest Council of Traditional Leaders, His Imperial Majesty, the Oni of Ife, who spoke on behalf of all the classical leaders of the Southwest, praised the Federal Government and the NPHCDA for putting the concept of the committee into action.
He said classical leaders have a vital role to play in caring about their people, adding that royal fathers now look beyond the government’s expectations to contribute their quota to improving the physical conditions of their people.
When asked to assess the number one state of physical care in his region, the ONI said: “So far everything is smart, the MoU is smart and we don’t just talk, we paint the conversation. “
“We have the number one fitness unit under the Ministry of Health at the state point and they are running with us. We have noticed that they are very serious, very guilty and that their efforts have had a great impact. You can see the result through 0 polio in Nigeria and the fact that the practice of female genital mutilation is going out of fashion.
Nigeria records 220 monkeypox cases, 4 deaths, says NCDC
Meanwhile, the NCDC revealed that the country has so far recorded 220 cases of monkeypox and 4 patients in 29 states.
It said that “from January 1 to August 14, 2022, 530 suspected cases, 220 cases shown, and 4 deaths were reported in 29 states. “
Yesterday, while presenting an update on the prevalence of infectious diseases in Nigeria at a special monthly briefing of the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja, NCDC Director General Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa also said that Nigeria has recorded a total of 3,610 suspected cases of cholera. 91 deaths in 31 states in 2022.
According to the DG, among suspected cholera cases since the beginning of the year, the five-year-old organization has been the hardest hit for both men and women.
He hoped that the NCDC will intensify surveillance and threat communication efforts, in addition to plans to revise the National Cholera Plan.
Regarding the COVID-19 update, Adetifa said Nigeria has tested 5,441,162 samples, 262,748 showed, 256,518 discharged, and 3,147 deaths.
He revealed that the five most sensible states with the cumulative number of instances were Lagos, FCT, Rivers, Kaduna and Oyo.
He further explained that in 2021, Nigeria had the highest number of COVID-19 cases until this year.
He noted, however, that in recent weeks, some states have become aware of the cases shown.
The NCDC chief said his company was engaging partners to review the implementation roadmap for COVID-19 immediate testing and self-testing.
He added that the NCDC also communicates with states for disease surveillance reporting, contact tracing, and other COVID-19 prevention and response activities.
Adetifa argued that the NCDC focuses its efforts on an effective public fitness reaction to prevent transmission and involve the outbreak of the disease.
Regarding the threat posed by the Marburg disease outbreak in Ghana, Adetifa said the NCDC-led National Multisectoral Working Group on Emerging Viral Bleeding Diseases (EVHDWG) has been established to coordinate preparedness efforts for MVD and other emerging viral hemorrhagic diseases. Diseases conducted a threat assessment to count preparedness activities in the country last month
However, he said the available knowledge suggests that the overall threat of the disease in the Nigerian population is moderate.
