Novak Djokovic’s resolve not to get the COVID-19 vaccine will save him at the Miami Open.
James Blake, the director, told Tennis Channel (h/t Reuters) that Djokovic had been denied a waiver to enter the U. S. USA:
“We tried to get Novak Djokovic to get an exemption, but that couldn’t happen. Obviously, we are one of the tournaments in the world. We would like to have players who can play. We did everything we could. We have tried to communicate with the government, but it’s not up to us.
This will be the time of the tournament in the USA. This season in which Djokovic will miss due to his vaccination status. He withdrew from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells before the draw when he tried to download an exemption to enter the country.
Djokovic has been looking to get a waiver to enter the U. S. It has been in the U. S. since last year. He was unable to participate in the U. S. Open. He was released in the U. S. last August because of Cinputs for Disease Control rules.
Unfortunately, he may not be able to make it to New York this time for the US Open. Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support. ❤️ Good luck to my fellow players!I will continue to have compatibility and positive spirit and look forward to the opportunity to compete again. ?? See you soon at the world of tennis! ??
Under existing CDC guidelines, all non-U. S. citizens will be required to provide evidence that they are fully vaccinated with an approved COVID-19 vaccine before boarding a U. S. -bound plane.
Djokovic has been open about his resolve to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“I’m not vaccinated and I don’t intend to get vaccinated, so the only smart news I can have is that I’m going to be stripped of my mandatory green vaccination card or whatever it’s called to enter the U. S. “A waiver,” reporters said last July.
Reuters noted that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott were among those who urged President Joe Biden’s management to allow Djokovic to register the country for the tournament.
Although he is not allowed to enter the country at this time, Djokovic will most likely be able to enter the United States soon. The government’s COVID-19 emergency declaration will recently expire on May 11.
According to Reuters, the end of the emergency declaration will lift foreign restrictions for unvaccinated people.
Djokovic recently competed at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships in February. His victory at the Australian Open in January earned him 22 career Grand Slam singles titles, tied with Rafael Nadal for the most in men’s history.
The 35-year-old’s next tournament will likely be the Serbia Open from April 17.
