Amos Pewter, a tinplate design firm in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, celebrates a milestone this year.

“The company was founded in 1974 by Greg and Suzanne Amos. They wanted to move to Nova Scotia, discovered Mahone Bay and fell in love with it,” said designer David Christoffel.

The company is located in a former shipbuilding workshop built in 1880.

“We create gifts, jewelry, and housewares out of pewter. Everything is designed and created here on site, and then we produce everything here on site. We make our molds here, melt the tin, complete and ship everywhere. the world,” Christoffel said.

“Tin is an alloy, it’s basically made up of tin. Most commonly, it’s tin, about 98 percent, and we also have a little bit of copper, bismuth, and a little bit of silver.

Christoffel much of the inspiration for the designs came from nature.

“A lot of our creations are molds. We take a real starfish or a real lobster claw, a shell and make a mold out of it. Then we pour the can into the mold and create tinplate copies,” he said.

Christoffel said he’s excited to see what the long-term holds for the company.

“We’re a Nova Scotia company, we’re a design company. We had a wonderful first 50 years, and the next 50 years will be wonderful. We’re going to evolve our designs and take them to the next level,” he said. saying.
