Mowi – French factory closure
The company, formerly known as Marine Harvest, will close the Marine Harvest Kritsen (MHK) salmon processing plant in Chateaulin, Brittany, where some 26 workers are affected by the decision.
Mowi’s control announced the news to representatives on Monday, August 31, and workers were informed of the resolution the next day.
In a message sent to only food, Mowi partly blamed Covid-19 for his decision and said, “The Covid-19 pandemic has affected Marine Harvest Kritsen’s business plan by 2020, in a context already weakened by the destruction of the Landivisiau plant.”behind the fireplace on July 11, 2018.
“2020, which is a year of transition before the opening of the new Landivisiau plant in 2021, is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in a sharp drop in orders, mainly from the external market.
“These unfavourable advances in the market therefore require a revival of the organization of MHK’s activities.These cases have led the company to move the activities of Chateaulin to the new site of Landivisiau.”
However, the employee representatives who spoke to the Ouest-France newspaper reported that the motivation for closure is Mowi’s ambition to reduce his global workforce by 10%.
Mowi said he would offer jobs to Chateaulin workers at the new plant, but workers’ representatives told Ouest-France that in some cases it can mean a day of more than two hours, even if the new plant is also in Brittany.
The new Landivisiau plant is expected to produce its first salmon next year with an initial volume target of 2,000 tonnes consistent with the year.
In 2014, MHK closed its Poullaouen plant, which hired about 180 permanent employees.
