A local network of fitness services twice tried to cash in on patients’ wallets, but failed.
Attorney General Letitia James announced Friday that Northwell Health has been fined and reimbursed more than $1 million for misleading New Yorkers during the pandemic.
New York City’s largest physical care network has touted its emergency departments as COVID-19 testing sites, leading to unwarranted fees for emergencies that were never requested or received.
“During a time of wonderful stress at the height of the pandemic, Northwell Health caused more fear and frustration among New Yorkers who earned emergency room expenses for the undeniable act of getting tested for COVID-19,” said Attorney General James. We’re putting cash back into New Yorkers’ wallets after Northwell Health tricked them. New York patients deserve not to receive wonderful rates.
The investigation through the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) found that between March 2020 and March 2021, Northwell Health misrepresented COVID-19 at 3 of its emergency centers: Lenox Hill Hospital, Lenox Health Greenwich, and Huntington Hospital.
The symptoms posted on those sites didn’t say visitors would have to pay an emergency fee, not just a testing fee. As a result, another 2,048 people who visited those locations to get tested for COVID-19 were billed emergency room visits, accruing more than $400,000 in fees.
In reaction to the findings, Northwell Health agreed to factor refunds totaling $400,164. 29 and will also pay a $650,000 penalty to the state. The agreement also requires Northwell Health to obviously inform patients about potential emergency branch fees when they apply for COVID-19 in the future. .
The Attorney General’s Office continues to inspire any New Yorker who suspects they have been subjected to deceptive or billing practices to contact the Office of Health Care of the Attorney General.
