Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha believes Alex Iwobi is now achieving his potential with Everton and believes Frank Lampard is the best coach for his nephew to continue his impressive form for the club and the country.
Okocha, who was named Nigerian Footballer of the Year seven times in a stellar career in the 1990s and 2000s, was present at Goodison Park when Iwobi scored a stunning first goal against Manchester United last weekend.
That purpose, the first of Iwobi’s crusade, is the latest in a long line of private highlights since Lampard took office in late January this year.
“It’s wonderful to see him play to his potential,” Okocha told Everton Live, the club’s live pre-match programme. “We all knew he had something special, but it took him a bit of time to adjust and I also think playing under a wonderful coach, who really needs his game and played it in his smart position made a big difference.
“Alex has his feet on the ground. You can’t expect a player to give more than he gives. Whether she’s doing well or not, you can be sure she’ll put the sweat on her blouse and that’s what you need to do. “Expect from a player: give one hundred percent at all times. This is, for me, the minimum requirement for a player and Alex provides it each and every time.
“I told him he might be too honest! But [playing in other positions] shows that he’s willing to sacrifice for the team, even if it affects his non-public goals and performance.
“I’m pleased to see him play in his point guard position, where he can take the ball and make things happen.
“I think Everton are enjoying Alex now and we’re all very happy he’s playing well. “
Of Lampard, Okocha said: “He’s such a wonderful player and his record speaks for itself.
“It’s an emotion to have played against him and also to have seen him play.
“I’m very pleased that he’s passing on his football wisdom now as a coach and I’m not surprised he’s doing well as a coach. “
Iwobi has also inspired the foreign stage, scoring in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Algeria in Constantine last month.
“He definitely [has a wonderful long career for Nigeria],” Okocha added. He has taken a step forward in the team.
The long term looks brilliant thanks to players like him now, who are bringing their reports from Europe to Nigeria. That’s what we want. “
“We have Everton to thank for Alex’s progression. I think all his improvement and all his paintings here, we get advantages as Nigerians. I would say thank you to Everton. “
