Nigeria’s efforts to expand a solution to the challenge of unavailability and maximum load of coronavirus diagnostic kits was nevertheless worthwhile with the progression of the RNASwift extraction kit.
This was revealed through Professor Alex Akpa, Director General of the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), on Thursday at a press conference held in the federal Ministry of Science and Technology’s convention hall in Abuja.
He said the RNASwift verification kit would only revolutionize PCR-based COVID-19 verification in Africa, but would also increase capacity by at least 50 times.
Akpa also stated that this would also reduce prices by more than 500% of the traditional kit used.
“This meets the needs of the Test Africa Initiative. The kits will be produced in Nigeria, which is wonderful news, as it will give preference to the needs of Africa.”
“The need for the invention conceived through the request of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), to control five million farmers and farmers.
“The goal is to make sure that our food safety chain is not compromised through COVID-19,” said the D-G.
According to him, the RNASwift kit is an indigenous diagnostic kit designed, developed and validated in Nigeria for the identity of the causal agent, SARS-Cov-2, which motivates COVID-19.
He noted that the diagnostic kit is “very accurate and responsive” and competes favorably with traditional and commercially available kits for COVID-19 diagnostics.
“This is in addition to a judicious selection of reagents that are human and ecological in the progression of the diagnostic kit protocol.
“In fact, the attributes of RNASwift kits make it a change element in the design and production of diagnostic kits for infectious diseases in the face of an epidemic or pandemic,” Akpa said.
He added that the allocation was made imaginable through clinical collaboration between NABDA, the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Nigerian Institute for Medical Research (NIMR).
Professor Akpa added that the technical team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr. Alison Nwokeoji, has also made the task a success.
In his speech at the briefing, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, recalled that the first index case for COVID-19 had been recorded in Nigeria on 27 February.
The UN said it had told Nigerian scientists a solution with a commitment of 36 million naira.
The Minister said Nigerians are artistic and talented enough to expand local responses to the major demanding situations facing the country, Africa and the world, with the RNASwift kit as an example.
“Today, the RNASwift extraction kit developed by Nigerian scientists has the ability to accurately, sensitively and economically stumble upon SARS-Cov2, the causal agent of COVID-19.
“With the RNASwift verification kit, we’ll review five million farmers, and the new verification kit will cost particularly,” Un said.
It reported that the African Development Bank was interested, not only as a Test Africa initiative, but Nigeria would be the meeting point.
Similarly, he said other African countries can benefit from check kits because of their low cost.
The Minister congratulated NABDA and said that the firm had only made the ministry proud, but also Nigeria as a whole.
Alhaji Sabo Nanono, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the check kit was invented and critically evolved into the existing scenario of inadequate check kits.
He said THAT FALSE at the forefront of food safety, adding that with the invention and successful validation of the verification kit, it is time for Nigerians to look inward.
“We have skillability and want to expand and build on those skillabilitys, our purpose of verifying that five million farmers and Nigerians are proud of those verification kits,” Nanono said.
He applauded NABDA for the project, saying that the good fortune of the verification kit is a vital milestone recorded at the FMST.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the briefing, Dr. Rose Gidado, NABDA’s scientist and deputy director, said the day was remarkable and historic for the agency, ministry and Nigerians.
She said the new verification kits can check more than 20,000 people per day, but if more verification centers were established, it can succeed at 50,000 with automation.
The Scientist added that the need to test more Nigerians was necessary in order to isolate and treat.
