Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the United States will propose next week to the UN Security Council a solution that will enlarge the arms embargo opposite Iran, which expires in October.
U.S. officials insisted that the embargo, which was put in position as a component of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal from which Trump’s leadership was withdrawn, remains in his position, bringing up Iranian violations of the Obama-era pact.
To be adopted, the solution wants nine votes and must avoid a veto through one of the five permanent members of the council, which includes China and Russia.
Beijing and Moscow enlargement.
“The Council would mock this project if it allowed the number one state of terrorism to buy weapons freely,” Pompeo told reporters.
“In a way or a shape or a matrix, we’ll do the right thing,” he promised. “We’ll make sure the arms embargo is extended.”
Trump’s management has threatened to reimaging past UN-approved sanctions, which were lifted as a component of the 2015 deal, if the arms embargo is extended.
Pompeo said the United States was “deeply aware” of the option, but said, “We will do everything in our power to enlarge the arms embargo. And I’m sure we’ll make it.”
