After a week of headlines about Ukraine’s incursion into Russia, it is now Russia a primary victory for the army. Authorities in the eastern Ukraine city of Pokrovsk have suggested citizens evacuate as troops approach. The city is one of Ukraine’s main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region.
At the same time, the head of the Ukrainian army said today via video call to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that his forces were advancing just over a kilometer into Russian territory. Ukraine now claims more than 440 square miles of Russia’s Kursk region.

At a rally in New Delhi, medical staff in white coats joined protesters in a difficult reckoning. The protests began a week ago when police discovered the 31-year-old’s bloodied body at a medical college in Kolkata. A subsequent autopsy showed that he had been sexually assaulted.

The Medical Association of India has called for a 24-hour recall in protest from Saturday, although it says an essential product will continue to be provided.
Final hurricane preparations are underway in Bermuda as Ernesto approaches its shores. The Category 2 typhoon is strengthening as it moves across the Atlantic, with maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometers per hour. It is possible that Ernesto will bring about thirty centimeters of rain to the United Kingdom from Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, some 250,000 more people have yet to be restored to power, just three days after the typhoon made landfall. Another 170,000 people are without water. President Biden today designated the site of a notorious 1908 racial insurrection in Illinois as a national monument. Biden joined through lawmakers and civil rights leaders in the Oval Office when he signed a proclamation making the site federal territory. The monument spans more than 1. 5 acres and recalls the two-day insurrections led by white mobs that resulted in the deaths of several black citizens and the destruction of dozens of homes and businesses.
Today at the White House, President Biden said that it is vital to that story and that it does not fade.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy today chose his former leader to update Sen. Bob Menendez, who plans to resign later this month following his conviction for federal corruption.
At a news conference in Newark today, Gov. Murphy said George Helmy will serve in the Senate until shortly after the November election. Once a winner is certified, Murphy will appoint that user to fill that role until the new Senate is sworn in early next year. Democratic Rep. Andy Kim is opposing Republican real estate developer Curtis Bashaw to fill the seat left by Menendez.
On Wall Street, stocks closed their most productive week of the year with some modest gains. The Dow Jones Trading Average gained nearly a hundred issues as recent economic insights calmed investors’ nerves. The Nasdaq added 37 issues to close the week. The S&P 500 extended its winning streak to its seventh consecutive session.
And on “PBS News Hour” we are saddened to report that former NPR CEO John Lansing passed away just months after leaving office. During his four-and-a-half years at the helm of NPR, Lansing has come to realize NPR navigates the COVID pandemic, layoffs and a currency crisis that he described as existential.
Before that, Lansing had a long career in radio and cable television. John Lansing, 67 years old.
