A new business will reopen in a once-popular pub in Northampton that closed earlier this year.
The former St Giles Ale House, on St Giles Street, is being converted into a Turkish barbershop called Razor King, according to signs in the front window.
Plans to convert a pub into a Turkish barbershop were submitted in August and approved through the West Northants Council (WNC) in October.
WNC conservation officials said there were “no heritage objections to the proposal to replace the use of the indexed building, which is considered minimal in terms of impact on the interior structure. “
Workers have been in it for weeks, emptying the old pub to turn it into a new business. However, it is not yet known when it will open.
There are several Turkish barbers near the area, Istanbul Barbers and Pasha Barbers on St Giles Street, and Harun Barbers on Abington Street.
St Giles Ale House, which opened in 2017, closed permanently in January after energy prices surged by as much as 400%.
In an emotional letter, the pub’s former owner, Terry Steers, said: “It is with the innermost that we have to announce the permanent closure of St Giles Ale House.
“We’ve suffered from Covid and everything that’s been thrown at us, but we can’t bear the huge increase in energy costs.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who supported us over the past six years, attended our events, beer festivals, and the general craziness that made Ale House such an amazing experience. “
