New Mexico Fitness Recommends Flu, COVID and RSV Shots

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – When it comes to COVID-19, New Mexico lately looks like many states.

“We’ve had a slight increase in COVID hospitalizations in New Mexico; overall, our hospitalizations are still very low,” said Dr. Brown. Miranda Durham of the state Department of Health.

Durham says it’s important for people six months and older to get vaccinated early to keep those numbers low.

“The new vaccine is expected; in fact, studies have shown that the new vaccine will be effective against viruses that are circulating lately,” Durham said.

CDC legalizes the new COVID-19 vaccine and RSV vaccines for adults 60 and older and healthy children.

“The clinical trials have been very encouraging, showing a nearly 75% reduction in doctor visits, hospitalizations and emergency room visits,” said Dr. Brown. Anna Durán from the UNM Health Sciences Center.

RSV season begins in the fall. Symptoms include fever, cough, congestion, shortness of breath and dehydration. Flu season also comes at the same time.

Flu shots are for anyone six months of age or older, this month or next.

“It is also appropriate to administer the flu vaccine along with the maximum of other vaccines available,” said Dr. Brown. Meghan Brett of the UNM Health Science Center. “So it would be, for example, COVID vaccines, the new RSV vaccine for seniors, and even things like pneumococcal vaccines. “
