New knowledge shows EU agriculture is resistant to COVID-19 and Brexit

Strong exports of red meat and wheat from the EU helped alleviate the demanding situations of the COVID-19 and Brexit industry in the first five months of 2020. As a result of these demanding situations, monthly EU export and import values27 in May 2020 fell by 7. 5% . 4. 5% respectively below last month’s level.

However, between January and May 2020, the total price of EU agri-food exports27 increased by 2% to the same level in 2019, reaching EUR 75. 8 billion, while the price of imports rose to EUR 52. 7 billion (an increase of almost 1 million euros).

The EU benefited from an agri-food industry surplus of 23. 1 billion euros in this period, an increase of 5% during the corresponding months of 2019. These are among the main conclusions contained in the monthly industry report for January- May 2020, published today through the European Commission.
