“I thank the other people of Newark and Mayor Ras Baraka for welcoming me to host another family circle festival here in this wonderful city,” said First Lady Tammy Murphy. “Our last Newark Family Festival in 2019 brought together over 1500 families and 130 organisations. These festivals serve as a one-stop shop for pregnant women and families to access our state’s must-have resources, from doula care to childcare, housing assistance, and more. I look forward to continuing our festival series as we work to make New Jersey the safest and fairest place in the country to have a baby and raise a circle of relatives.
New Jersey has some of the largest disparities in physical fitness outcomes for mothers and children. An African-American mother is more than seven times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than a white mother, and a black baby is 3 times more likely to die than a white mother. White baby dies before his first birthday. The rate for a Hispanic mother is 3 times that of a white mother, and the rate for a Hispanic baby is 1. 5 times that of a white baby.
In a city like Newark, with gigantic black and Latino communities, the consequences of New Jersey’s maternal and infant fitness crisis are undeniable and heartbreaking. Between 2009 and 2019, Newark had the fourth rate of black infant deaths and the sixth hispanic infant death rate. .
In 2019, First Lady Tammy Murphy introduced Nurture NJ, a statewide program committed to reducing the epidemic of maternal and infant mortality in New Jersey and ensuring equal care for women and youth of all races and ethnicities. Since its inception, Nurture NJ has created a state strategic plan, saw 43 parts of the maternal and infant fitness law signed by Governor Murphy, evolved and implemented innovative systems and policies, held 16 family festivals across the state, and more, positioning New Jersey as a national leader in addressing maternal and child health. children’s fitness crisis.

Baraka, Newark Community Health Centers, Ironbound Community Corporation, South Ward Promise, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Congressman Donald Payne, Senator Teresa Ruiz, Congresswoman Shanique Speight, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, the Burke Foundation, and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.
