The United States is facing an immediate increase in new infections with Covid-19 variants in dozens of states.
Cases are peaking, likely surging in 39 states and not declining anywhere in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Evidence suggests an expected wave of Covid-19 in the summer. The CDC no longer tracks individual cases, it still estimates transmission in emergency room visits. Covid deaths and emergency room visits have increased in the past week. Hospitalizations increased 25% from May 2 to June 1.
California appears to be experiencing a noticeable increase in infections. State data suggests high levels of coronavirus in wastewater, and the prevalence of Covid has increased since May. The positivity rate for Covid tests in California has increased from about 3% to 7. 5% in recent times. month, according to a report by NBC News.
“It looks like the summer wave is about to begin,” said Dr. Thomas Russo, leader of the infectious diseases branch at the University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Historically, Covid infections have been higher during the summer due to increased indoor travel and gatherings. This year is no exception, experts expect a milder wave in terms of severe illness.
Several variants are very likely contributing to this national trend, said Dr. Dan Barouch, director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
“We are witnessing the beginning of an increase in infections that coincides with the new variants: KP. 2, KP. 3 and LB. 1. These variants seem to have advantages over the previous ones,” he said.
All three variants are descendants of JN. 1, which dominated this winter. KP. 2, the dominant variant in the U. S. The U. S. last month was followed by KP. 3 in early June. KP. 1. 1, in combination with them, accounts for approximately 63% of Covid infections. Scientists jointly refer to those variants as “FLiRT” because of their amino acid modifications.
LB. 1 accounts for another 17. 5% of Covid infections and is expected to dominate soon. “He’s kind of a new kid on the block,” Barouch said.
A preprint suggests that LB. 1 is more contagious than the “FLiRT” variants and would possibly evade coverage against vaccines or past infections.

“Assuming the initial knowledge is true, that it is more immune and more infectious than KP. 2 and KP. 3, it is a winning formula for infecting more people,” Russo said.
The CDC does not track Covid symptoms over time, making it difficult to know if the ailments caused by the new variants are different. Covid symptoms have been consistent for over two years.
Other spots may simply herald the spread of the virus this summer. It’s possible that cases will continue as others retreat indoors to escape the heat and gather for the Fourth of July.

Russo recommended that vulnerable people receive the Covid vaccine if they have not already done so. The antiviral drug Paxlovid is also expected to help reduce hospitalizations or deaths.
Most young, healthy people can look forward to the updated Covid vaccines expected this fall. The FDA has pleaded with vaccine brands to target the KP. 2 variant, though its prevalence has already declined.
“It turns out that the virus is already evolving beyond the fall boosters, and we’re only in June,” Barouch said. However, updated vaccines still protect against existing variants.
