Nearly all surgeries postponed due to COVID-19 are now complete in British Columbia, Health Minister says

British Columbia The government says nearly all surgeries delayed due to the five waves of the COVID-19 pandemic are now complete.

In a progress report released Monday, Health Minister Adrian Dix said surgery volumes are now higher than before the pandemic began.

“We show that when surgeries are postponed, patients temporarily postpone them, and we demonstrate the strength of our B. C. surgical formula. to overcome the challenge of providing patients with the surgeries they need,” Dix said in a news release.

Scheduled and elective surgeries were first postponed on March 16, 2020, at the start of the first wave of the pandemic to prepare the medical formula for COVID-19 patients. They have been suspended several times due to new outbreaks of the disease, excessive weather and shortages.

According to the province, as of Nov. 10, 99. 9% of the 14,783 patients whose surgeries were postponed in the first wave and who were still surgeries have now gone under the knife, as have 99. 2% of the 3,166 delayed patients. in the current wave and 3, and 98 percent of the 6,620 patients in the fourth and fifth waves.

At the midpoint of the 2022-23 fiscal year, the Ministry of Health says 4% more surgeries were performed than at the same time in 2019.

Dix promised that if the recent outbreak of respiratory illnesses led to the postponement of surgical operations, “we will temporarily reschedule those operations. “
