NASS congratulates AIB for securing Nigerian airspace

Nigeria’s National Assembly has praised the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) for making sure Nigeria’s airspace remains in recent years.

The chairman of the House Aviation Committee, the Honourable Nnolim Nnaji, praised the factor when the Joint Aviation Committee of the National Assembly visited the IYB in the supervisory service at its headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the end of AIB’s presentation, Hon. Nnaji said: “I think we have to congratulate AIB for ensuring the protection of our airspace in recent times. Preventing serious injuries by addressing minor incidents through AIB has contributed greatly to the non-violent airspace we have enjoyed and we need them to do more to keep pace.

Previously in his presentation, the Commissioner and Director General of the AIB, Eng. Akin Olateru,

had declared Nigeria’s airspace to be one of the safest in the world.

Engineer Olateru, who said this in Abuja while addressing the Joint Aviation Committee of the National Assembly, also noted that in the last six years, Nigeria has recorded 3 deaths.

Engr, Olateru also said Nigeria’s relative airspace has reduced aircraft insurance in Nigeria, as a Boeing 737 is insured for $150,000 compared to $800,000 in the past.

Commenting on some of AIB’s achievements, Eng. Olateru said AIB has lately one of the world’s most sensitive laboratories, ranked among the five most sensitive globally.

He also revealed that Nigeria does not want to send black boxes for investigation in the event of a plane crash, as the AIB has the technical capacity to carry out the investigation effectively.
