RCMP is advising northern travelers to take appropriate precautions after rescuing two men from a dumped boat in Buffalo Lake on Monday.
Hay River RCMP said in a press Tuesday that they won a SOS misery notification from a SPOT aircraft around 3 p. m. Monday. The call arrived about a mile from Buffalo Lake, south of Hay River.
The RCMP states that it made a decision based on the tactile data and text communication that navigators had sunk into turbulent waters in Buffalo Lake.
Great Slave Helicopters and the Hay River Marine Rescue Society helped the RCMP take the two men to the Hay River Regional Health Center.
The men were treated for “hypothermia that doesn’t endanger their lives,” the police press said.
“Plan for the unexpected”
The RCMP this incident to remind travelers to “prepare for the unexpected” before traveling.
They propose to leave a detailed plan with a circle of family members or friends who understand the departure time, arrival time and destination.
The RCMP also stated that travelers deserve to bring more fuel, food, water, clothing and matches in case they encounter an inclement weather, and have a radio, satellite phone or other functional communication device.
They also remind navigators to use an individual flotation device and to make sure their boat is in good condition.
“Make sure you get acquainted with your shipment and practice your emergency exercises,” he said.
Police say when calling 911 or a local RCMP detachment for help, provide as much data as possible, add your location and if you are injured so the search and rescue team can prepare a quick response.
