Multilingual magazine Armenian guest language

A component of USC’s language branch on campus since last November, the multilingual literary magazine Trojan Bloom aims to provide an artistic outlet for non-English language writers taught at USC, and expand the magazine to encompass more languages spoken in the campus community at large.

Funded through USC’s Center for Language and Culture, Trojan Bloom aims to bring together those interested in art writing and learning non-English languages by compiling a variety of poetry, prose, and other miscellaneous pieces, and constitutes the 15 languages that are taught in the campus department. Now, in their current semi-annual edition, they will offer a guest language program that will constitute languages that may not have a USC course, but are spoken; For the autumn semester, this is Armenian.

To produce Armenian as a guest language for semester work, Trojan Bloom is in collaboration with the USC Institute of Armenian Studies, which will help edit and correct the submissions. Editor-in-Chief Tania Apshankar, an art writing student, said the resolution to upload Armenian for the fall was a step toward reflecting a well-established language in Los Angeles, a city that is home to more than 200,000 Armenians, and providing a platform for a difficult era in Armenia’s modern history.

“First of all, we sought to have languages that reflected the Los Angeles community, and Armenian is a language that is widely spoken in general. . . as well as [due to] the ongoing unrest,” Apshankar said. “Unfortunately, there is [a] war situation with Azerbaijan, and we were only looking to provide a platform for other people to express themselves. “

For Shushan Karapetian, deputy director of USC’s Institute of Armenian Studies and guest editor of Trojan Bloom, make sure the voices of her scholars were heard. present works that speak to Armenia’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage that venerate all parts of its identity.

“Thematically, those pieces will reflect the crisis that many of those scholars are experiencing, whether or not they are speaking directly about war right now. I think this kind of diasporic angst and existential anxiety will manifest itself [in the work of academics], whether it’s the language, the endangered Armenian state, or just the conversion of Armenian identity,” Karetian said.

Mariam Manukyan, a political science student and contributor to the magazine, is running to fulfill this intention. He said writing in Armenian allowed him to better express his complex feelings. Manukyan’s paintings focus on his existential anxieties while exploring political and ethnic tensions. in Armenia, and her works come with formal and informal Armenian, which she believes brings more of herself to the page.

“There are things about [my] feelings that I can only talk about in Armenian because it’s the closest thing to me,” Manukyan said.

Writer Merri Kuyumjian, who has a degree in foreign affairs, said she was very happy to have discovered a platform with Trojan Bloom and welcomed the opportunity to see the poem she wrote and translated with her grandfather published.

“Being able to celebrate our culture through our language and literature is great, and for us to be able to share it with non-Armenians is even better. . . it’s like USC is giving us a voice and almost makes us feel like, ‘Yes, we’re vital on campus, our culture and heritage are vital on campus,'” Kuyumjian said. “Having that treat with my grandfather [also] was super amazing. “

Trojan Bloom will accept submissions until October 9 and will accept works in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Classical Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Persian, Polish, Russian, and Armenian.
