As rescue efforts continued on Tuesday, the death toll increased to 20, and another 10 people are still missing.
There were 71 other people inside the hotel in Quanzhou City, southeast of Fujian Province, when construction collapsed on Saturday. The hotel was used as a quarantine site for other people inflamed with the COVID-19 virus.
Two supermarkets on the first floor were being renovated and a pillar supposedly deformed minutes before the collapse, said on Sunday the official Xinhua news firm, which brought a district official.
Construction had been illegally rebuilt several times, a senior unidentified official said Tuesday, according to the news agency. Construction began in 2013 and became an explicit hotel in 2018.

Shang Yong, deputy director of the Ministry of Emergency Management, said a full investigation into the turn of fate would be introduced to identify the cause of the collapse, and that any convicted official would be held accountable.
Rescuers were eddes with protective devices and disinfectants to minimize exposure to the virus.
The new coronavirus first exploded in mainland China last year, where more than 80,000 have been shown to date. There have been more than 3,100 deaths since the outbreak.

Of the 80,000 cases shown, about 74%, or 60,000 people, have recovered so far.
