PROVIDENCE, RI – Most coronavirus sites in the state of Rhode Island will now require an appointment, a Health Department spokesman said Wednesday.

State fitness officials said the switch to an appointment-based formula would streamline the screening procedure by eliminating long lines and crowds at checkpoints. While the maximum of 17 state-run Rhode Island testing sites are now available by appointment only, Block Island Fire and Rescue Barn and T. F. VERT will continue to settle for walk-in visits.

Health officials said Rhode Island’s COVID-19 testing program completes about 4,600 appointments on average according to weekdays. Officials also said they are working to expand appointment availability and would possibly open more testing sites if the demand for testing continues to increase.
“Now that the Delta variant is the dominant variant of COVID-19 in Rhode Island, vaccination and testing are more necessary than ever,” a spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Health said.
