Gregor Townsend warned Argentina that Scotland were “scratching the surface” after matching their three-game test run with a 29-6 aggregate win in Salta.

Scotland ran on 4 attempts thanks to Hamish Watson, Mark Bennett, Matt Fagerson and Sam Johnson and scored 21 unanswered points at the time Los Pumas were impressed on Independence Day in Argentina.

The series will now be in Santiago del Estero next Saturday, with head coach Townsend insisting that the most productive is yet to come from Scotland.

“There’s a lot of unity in the team, it’s an organisation that cares about others and plays for their country,” Townsend told Sky Sports.

“We knew we would have an answer this week. The way the players trained, how we decided to improve.

“We are scratching the surface with this functionality, we will work to bring our functionality next week. “

Scotland’s first three-test summer series began with a first 26-18 defeat.

On a very hot and windy afternoon in northwestern Argentina, there were more problems for the forwards, as Scotland were reckless in owning the ball and the hosts won 6-3 just before the break.

But the player of the match, Watson, scored his 50th cap with a 7th check-try, and the visitors’ advantage was revealed from that moment on.

Fagerson was launched into a first test and centres Bennett and Johnson provided wide running angles to put Scotland in control.

Townsend added: “We started the game well. It was a combined game afterwards, but at the beginning of the moment we took the ball away from them.

We knew we would have one this week.

“I found that part of the career and the effort in the touch is exceptional.

“(There are) many areas to improve, but winning an adjustment in Argentina requires a lot of work. So, a real credit to our team for that.

“We knew it would be a difficult challenge, but our outstanding organisation, especially the backline, stood up to a quality away team in exhausting conditions.

“A foundation to build for next week and next season. This third quarter, we had a lot of ball, a genuine credit for our maul and scrum performances.

The only problem is injuries to fullbacks Rory Hutchinson and Kyle Rowe.

Townsend said Hutchinson was in doubt to make the series decisions, while expressing fears that London’s Irish wing Rowe would suffer a “serious injury” after winning his first international match.

Scottish skipper Grant Gilchrist said: “We bounced back from last week, but we came here to win a series and possibly wouldn’t get ahead of each other. “

“It’s much more like that. But there is more expansion in this team and we will want it next week. “

Argentina captain Julian Montoya said Los Pumas had paid the penalty for the lack of precision and efficiency.

“The first half was quite balanced,” Leicester hooker Montoya said. “In the moment part they scored undeniable attempts and we want to be more determined in our line of purpose.

“When we were in his 22s, we weren’t going to score. A few passes forward and advanced.

“They scored too easily and we’re going to paint for the next game. “
