More than 130 endangered seals have been discovered dead on Kazakhstan’s beaches in the Caspian Sea, he said Wednesday.
“Carcasses of dead seals have been found,” a spokesman for Kazakhstan’s ecology ministry told AFP.
His ministry said 131 seals had died on the beaches of the Caspian Sea in the west of the country.
Autopsies will be carried out and Kazakh environmental experts said soil and water samples from the region will be analyzed.
The Caspian seal, the only species discovered in the Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland water frame, was placed through the government of Kazakhstan in November 2020 on the endangered species list.
The Caspian Sea, the largest inland water framework in the world, is bounded by countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan.
The Caspian seal population has suffered for decades from overhunting and the effects of commercial pollution.
