The Dutch onion season began slowly this year. Demand is starting to wane now. People are waiting for the official opening of the Senegalese market. It is the main destination for Dutch onions. “They will soon announce the opening of this market. When that happens, things can get serious,” says Eric Moerdijk of Monie, a Dutch sorting and packaging plant.
According to him, there are several reasons why tranquility kicks off the season. “There are enough onions in Europe, and yields are good. Some countries are also fed up with their own onions, even when they export them. This is partly due to the coronavirus pandemic. The prices of the packaging were also incredibly high.”
“You can’t blame COVID-19 for everything. But it has had a global impact, causing uncertainty. So I think a lot of corporations have tried to restrict their threat this season. They have responded more to short-term trade. I’m waiting there, there’s going to be more tension in the market. This is because costs are at a moderate level, given the source. But Senegal’s arrival on the market. If the source remains tied, the market will possibly remain stable.”
“The harvest is going well, but you have to decide your moments. We had a hot few weeks where we couldn’t do anything. We started at the end of last week. But it rains a little in the afternoon. These are shorter days, between showers,” explains the conditioner.
“The yields of the onion series are good. They still vary with the first series. But the performances of the expired series were good. Onion seedling yields vary widely. It’s not an optimal performance, but it’s not as bleak as it was two years ago. The differences, however, are excellent. There are plots in the southwest of the country where crops have failed,” Eric concludes.
