Despite Vermont’s small size, citizens of the Green Mountain State don’t have to travel far to see a ghost or demon in the spooky season.
Vermont is the third most haunted state in the U. S. The U. S. is tied with Florida and second only to Maine and Texas, according to new research from media company BonusFinder. Effects are calculated based on the number of cemeteries, ghost sightings, resident paranormal investigators, and Haunted Places consistent with capita in status.
The BonusFinder report states that Vermont is home to at least 90 haunted places. Ghostly attractions like Emily’s Bridge in Stowe or the Bennington Triangle near Glastenbury Mountain get plenty of attention during the spooky season.

For Vermonters who need to make a stop at underrated sales options or are just looking for a shorter trip, Chittenden County has plenty of selling options.
In addition to having the highest number of haunted buildings in the state, the University of Vermont (UVM) is also, according to some, the most haunted university in the United States. Ghostly tenants have rented apartments in several locations, it has reported, adding the Royall Tyler. The theater (its eternal resident pretends to be friendly) and the Converse Hall and Simpson Hall dormitories, where students reported unexplained noises and drafts, according to the university’s newspaper, the Vermont Cynic.
Many of UVM’s haunted buildings were once homes, such as the university’s advising center, which is said to be inhabited by the active ghost of its former owner, Captain John Nabb, who is known for shutting windows and doors and throwing buckets, as reported through Only in Your State. Other examples come with the public relations building of the university, which is believed to have hosted the appearance of former owner John E. Booth, who can be heard freaking out in his longtime home, and the Bittersweet House, where other people saw the ghost of Margaret Smith, its widowed owner who died there in 1961.

Unlike the other members on this list, staff members are arguably the only lucky (or perhaps unlucky) souls to encounter the spirit lurking at this restaurant. When the building was called Carburs Restaurant, it was reported that a guy shot himself in the basement, some other people say the bullet is still lodged in the wall, according to Vermonter. The spirit of the man, who would lock the workers in the basement, basically terrorizes the women. Female employees are discouraged from visiting the domain alone.

While not technically as haunted as UVM, St. Michael’s has a lot of spooky stories. Residents of the men’s dormitory, for example, heard walking into the enclosed attic, where occupants also saw lamps inexplicably turned on and off.
In addition, the ghost of a nun is said to haunt the school’s theater, which is intended for actors.
St. Michael’s may also have been the site of occult rituals in the 1970s, but for some it’s more of an urban legend.
The Shelburne Museum is home to the Dutton House, a family apartment built by Salmon Dutton in 1781 that was donated to the museum in 1948 after being abandoned for four decades. Staff members claim to have heard voices and disembodied footsteps and seen spirits, adding that of a grumpy old man, a hospitable woman and a friendly little girl, according to Haunted Houses.

Built in 1796, the former home of Vermont’s first governor, Thomas Chittenden, has recently served as a bed-and-breakfast and for events for the Halloween chain, adding The Haunted Forest and Halloween Spooktacular at Catamount.
Before the lodge closed a few years ago, visitors claimed to hear ghostly youngsters on the ground playing and laughing at night.
