The impressionist painter’s lush gardens are full of tourists, attracting more than a million visitors a year and making it one of the most visited sites in the northern province of Normandy.
But with French borders still closed for foreign tourists as the country cautiously lifts its blockade, the reopening provides an intimate delight to local visitors, most of them from the nearby towns of Rouen or Paris.

To comply with social distance regulations, no organization is allowed in the domain, visitors must wear protective masks and must adhere to a one-way itinerary and an online e-book.

“At this time of year, we welcome 4,000 to 5,000 people a day, now we can have a maximum of 900 more people,” said chief gardener Jean-Marie Avisard, who has worked in the gardens for 32 years.
“We are very pleased to show what we are doing. People will see the lawn as a personal visit,” he added.
Visitors such as 73-year-old Parisian Jerome Blanchet welcomed this special moment away from the crowds. “I think it’s a very smart initiative to reopen. We see it (the garden) in exceptional conditions,” he added.

Roberto Vellutini, a 66-year-old Italian who lives in Paris, agrees: “There aren’t many people. It’s not boring … The day is very good.”

The painter lived on The Deserted Farm of Giverny with his circle of relatives from 1883 until his death in 1926.
He turned it into a picturesque pink mansion, with the earth focused on a lawn with thousands of roses, daffodils, tulips and peonies and a Japanese-style water lawn with a crescent bridge that crosses the water lily pond.
The assets were opened to the public in the 1980s and last year received a record 717,271 visitors. Half were foreign tourists, basically from the United States, China but also from Germany, South Korea, Italy, Great Britain and Japan.
