SINGAPORE – The new Moderna COVID-19 vaccine targeting the original new strain of coronavirus and the Omicron variant has been for the number one series and booster shots in other people over the age of 18 in Singapore, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said Friday (October 7).

The advice from the Expert Panel on COVID-19 Vaccination issued on the same day comes after the Health Sciences Authority used the bivalent Moderna Spikevax vaccine last month.

“This updated vaccine is similar to the original COVID-19 vaccines and, as such, the number one vaccination series for those who have not yet been vaccinated will also be replaced with the new bivalent vaccine when possible,” the committee said.

The vaccine is expected to provide superior coverage against severe disease in all variants and greater coverage against long-term variants than existing vaccines, according to the committee.

Those who have gained their booster moment will receive a booster dose of the bivalent vaccine about five months after their last booster dose when it becomes available, the committee said. Therefore, other people over the age of 50 can receive up to five injections of the vaccine, adding the bivalent vaccine.

Starting Oct. 17, other adults over age 50 and those who have not yet reached minimum coverage will be able to get the bivalent vaccine. The rest of the population will be given the vaccine as more doses arrive.

The committee also recommends the use of the bivalent vaccine for the number one immunization of Americans 18 and older. However, the Pfizer-BioNTech and Novavax/Nuvaxovid vaccines, which target the original COVID-19 strain, will still be available to those who prefer them for the time being.

The bivalent vaccine is not available to people younger than 18 because it has not been tested in this age group.

Meanwhile, starting Oct. 25, children older than six months to 4 years can get their number one vaccine with the Moderna Spikevax vaccine and those older than five to 11 can get a booster dose with the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine, the Ministry of Public Health said. .

The committee assessed that the Moderna Spikevax vaccine is favorable for coverage against severe COVID-19 in young children and provides coverage against Omicron subvariants BA. 2. 75 and BA. 2. 10, and possible long-term variants of COVID-19.

For children ages five to 11, their antibody levels and vaccine coverage against COVID-19 hospitalization decline over time. As such, the recall of Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty may cover against serious illness, the Health Ministry said.

As of Monday, all differentiated protective control (SFM) measures for vaccination will be lifted.

With the lift, the VDS will no longer be needed for occasions with more than 500 participants at any given time, nightlife institutions providing dance activities and restaurants in catering institutions, adding street vending centers.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said last Friday in a Facebook post that Singapore would move towards a new definition of “updated vaccination” to count the number of vaccines citizens receive.

Those who have gained at least the minimum coverage of 3 doses of Pfizer or Moderna or Novavax/Nuvaxovid or 4 injections of Sinovac-CoronaVac are up to date on their vaccinations. This also applies to other people over the age of 50 who receive an additional dose beyond the minimum coverage between five months and a year after their last dose of vaccine.

“This new updated definition is similar to how we take vaccines as opposed to influenza, an endemic disease,” Ong said.
