SHANGHAI, Nov 28 (Reuters) – U. S. vaccine maker Moderna this month began building its first factory in China to make mRNA drugs, the company said on Tuesday.
Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has not yet been approved in China, but the company announced in July that it had signed an agreement with the municipal government of Shanghai, China’s financial hub, to study opportunities for research, development and production of mRNA drugs in the country. . The Shanghai plant would manufacture medicines for the population of the country, the world’s second-largest after India, a Moderna spokesperson told Reuters.
“Our purpose in China is to improve physical security by focusing on unfulfilled desires and contributing to the ecosystem of medical answers that can be had for patients in China,” he said in an emailed statement.
It did specify what it planned to manufacture at the plant or when production might begin. (Reporting via Andrew Silver; editing by David Goodman)
