New Delhi: Two years after the emergence of the Omicron variant of covid-19, the virus has resurfaced in India its derived sublineage, BA 2. 86 (Pirola), JN. 1. Kerala reported its first case in a 78-year-old woman, marking the country’s first encounter with the variant. The patient reported mild symptoms and has now recovered from the infection.
Classified as a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization, JN. 1 would be better at evading immunity. Its appearance coincides with winter, a season in which respiratory ailments increase, especially in locations where the AQI point is between low and severe. Mint explains what the new virus is, its symptoms and the effectiveness of the vaccine:
The new variant, experts warned, appears to be more immunologically evasive and is known to WHO scientists as an “interesting variant. “
JN. 1 was first detected in the United States in September 2023. At the end of October, it accounted for less than 0. 1% of SARS-CoV-2 viruses, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Cases in India have been reported in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
India recorded 260 new coronavirus infections, while active cases rose to 1,828, according to Health Ministry data updated on Monday. So far, 4 deaths have also been reported in Kerala.
According to the CDC, the continued expansion of JN. 1 suggests that it is possibly more transmissible or evades the human immune system more. But the CDC also cautioned that it does not yet have a clear indication of whether the new variant poses a threat to public health compared to other variants circulating recently. “There is no indication of increased severity of JN. 1 at this time,” he added.
WHO technical director Maria Van Kerkhove wrote on the social media platform Mycoplasma pneumonia et al. SARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve. JN. 1 (subvariant of BA. 2. 86) is already a VOI and its diffusion continues to increase.
At least 35 countries have reported the presence of the variant, and Singapore has seen a major resurgence of cases. “Cases infected with JN. 1, a sublineage of BA. 2. 86, currently account for the vast majority of covid-19 cases in Singapore. Based on available local and foreign data, there is no transparent indication lately that BA. 2. 86 or JN. 1 are more transmissible or cause more severe disease than other circulating variants,” the Ministry of Health said about Singapore.
The Health Ministry, in a letter on Monday, sent letters to the states and territories of the union, outlining control strategies. The letter noted that “through consistent and collaborative movements between the Center and state governments, we have been able to maintain the trajectory at low and sustainable rates. However, as the covid-19 virus continues to circulate and its epidemiological habit adapts to India’s weather patterns and the flow of other pathogens, it is vital to maintain momentum to cope well with public health challenges.
The Center also suggested that states constantly monitor the situation and report influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) at the district level. Following the surge in covid cases, Kerala and Karnataka remain on high alert and there are no restrictions on cross-border movements between the two states.
The symptoms are similar to those of other SARS-CoV-2 variants, the Health Ministry said. Therefore, doctors monitor fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, sore throat, cough, fatigue, etc.
The recommendation remains that of covid: stay home when symptoms appear and inform a doctor if they worsen, persist or if the user is immunocompromised or elderly. Doctors recommend the use of a mask in crowded areas, especially closed ones, if the number of cases increases locally. Staying in well-ventilated spaces reduces the spread of infection. Additionally, washing your hands regularly prevents infection.
According to the WHO and CDC, the updated vaccines are effective unlike the JN. 1 subvariant. However, data from Singapore showed that those who had received their last dose of the Covid-19 vaccine more than a year ago were more likely to want to be hospitalized. Experts said a broad vaccination policy and upcoming non-symptomatic infections would likely have resulted in a significant policy point in India.
According to the WHO, sera from patients with breakthrough Omicron infections (including XBB) showed potent neutralizing activity physically opposite to BA. 2. 86, suggesting that upcoming monovalent existing B cells, which cross-protection opposed BA. 2. 86 and its descendant lines (including JN. 1).
The Ministry of Health also hopes that the existing line of treatment for the virus will be effective against the variant. Although there is no recommendation about getting a booster shot, doctors recommend vaccination aimed at others whose immune systems might be compromised and the elderly, if needed.
