MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico on Tuesday accepted a formal request from the United States to investigate alleged labor rights abuses at call centers owned by Spain’s Atento in central Mexico’s Hidalgo state.
Mexico’s Ministry of Economy announced that it had accepted the request from U. S. industry officials in conjunction with Mexico’s Ministry of Labor.
Earlier this month, the United States said it had uncovered evidence of “egregious” labor rights violations at Atento’s call centers in Mexico.
Atento, which operates two call centers in Hidalgo that provide visits to BBVA bank consumers, did not respond to a request for comment.
The Mexican government has forty-five days to conduct an examination to determine whether the right to hard work at the company has been denied, he said.
He added that the review is part of an immediate reaction mechanism to the North American industrial agreement USMCA, which includes the United States and Mexico.
