Mexico posts deaths and near-record cases of coronavirus

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico recorded on Tuesday 836 deaths most shown by COVID-19 and 7051 cases of coronavirus, two of the highest figures recorded by the country, as the continued maximum infection rates hinder reopening efforts.

Mexico now has a cumulative total of approximately 311,500 shown and 36,327 deaths.

New infections have hampered the government’s plan to announce weekly commercial reopening updates. Lately it limits the number of other people allowed in hotels, restaurants and other businesses and has not allowed the reopening of bars, clubs and concert halls.

Some previous reopening measures had to be canceled in recent weeks after crowds began to gather and cases were not temporarily minimized enough.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health announced that degrees of reopening and threats with national color-coded would be updated every two weeks, rather than weekly. On the scale, a “red” alert causes the ban on maximum non-essential activities, while orange and yellow gradually allow more companies to operate, and green would mean anything that reaches normal. About part of the country is lately at an “orange” alert level, the rest in “red”.

Due to a delay in processing the effects of checks, the Department of Health has also begun to estimate the number of deaths and instances by adding a portion of the effects of pending checks as “positive”. Mexico has had a positive verification rate of about 50% since the first few weeks of the pandemic, reflecting the country’s lack of verification, only about 750,000 nationwide so far.

These estimates are higher than the existing figures shown. As of Tuesday, the estimated number of instances was approximately 350,000, while the estimated number of deaths was 38,263.

Officials acknowledge that even these numbers are underestimated, as many others with mild or non-existent symptoms are not tested and many have died without evidence.
