MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – The number of coronavirus deaths in Mexico on Friday exceeded 70,000 after the government reported more than 500 new deaths, a grim step for a country that is among the highest affected by the pandemic.
To make matters worse, knowledge of excess mortality from mid-March to early August means that the total number of deaths beyond the official count exceeds tens of thousands.
On Friday night, fitness reported 534 new virus-like deaths, bringing the total to 70,183, while an additional 5,935 cases bring the total to 658,299.
The virus has devastated an already suffering economy, which is now expected to contract by up to 13% this year, the most domestic recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
According to official data, Mexico has the fourth number of deaths in the world and the thirteenth consistent with the capita, according to a johns Hopkins University account.
But before this month, the Ministry of Health reported more than 120,000 “additional” deaths from mid-March to August 1. The measure compares this year’s mortality figures to four-year mortality figures from 2015 to 2018.
Brazil remains the No. 1 in Latin America, the region with the highest number of contagions in the world, either from cases shown of coronavirus or by deaths, it recorded a total of 4. 2 million contagions and more than 128,000 deaths to date.
As a smart news story, the rate of new instances in Peru, Colombia and Mexico has declined in recent weeks.
Overall, more than 900,000 people have died internationally as a result of the pandemic, the deadliest outbreaks in the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico.
