MEXICO CITY: The mayor of Mexico City warned Monday that stricter restrictions on coronaviruses could come into effect later in the week as HOSPITALizations in COVID-19 in the expanding capital increased.

“We still have time to take five steps to prevent (hospitalizations) from expanding in the coming weeks,” Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters, noting that hospital beds for coronavirus patients are almost full.

Hospitalizations are higher for about 10 days and officials are tracking the trend this week to see an increase in infections in Mexico’s largest urban center, a city of approximately nine million people surrounded by dense urban expansion.

Sheinbaum said he did not need to ban any activity, however, he would have limitations such as cutting the hours of some businesses to avoid overcrowding and saving more deaths.

Mexico has lost 86,167 lives to the coronavirus pandemic and recorded 851,227 infections, according to government data, the actual numbers can be much higher.

“Let us be aware that the pandemic continues. We’ll have to keep protecting ourselves,” Sheinbaum said.
