MEPs expressed fears about the lack of coordination of evidence and the lack of standardized Covid-19 criteria among EU Member States.

“There are no unusual threat criteria, no unusual case-counting modalities, no unusual cross-border screening strategy, and no unusual protocol for monitoring asymptomatic patients,” said Renew Europe group leader MEP Dacian Cioloo (September 2), he said on a Wednesday.

Cioloo suggested that Member States put “a genuine European fitness policy” in position to combat coronavirus; warn how “harmful” the lack of coordination is at the beginning of the pandemic.

“We want more coordination. Harmonisation is difficult, but it is necessary,” MEP Peter Liese (European People’s Party) told the press on Wednesday, and said covid-19-like measures should be based on clinical recommendations without political aspects. .

Green MEP Jutta Paulus, for her part, said EU citizens are “confused” because there are other protocols in other Member States that are changing.

In Austria, for example, the quarantine era lasts ten days, while in the rest of the Member States it lasts two weeks.

At the same time, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said priority should be given to harmonising test functions and methodologies.

For ECDC, testing is one of the main parameters that indicate infection levels.

But there are differences in capacity and methodologies between Member States, resulting in a lack of harmonised reports.

While some EU countries pass 173 tests consistent with 100,000 inhabitants, others exceed 6,000.

“Member States have recognised that the scenario is not smart and are lately discussing how to harmonize certain criteria, [but] harmonisation is now at the testing stage,” ECDC Director Andrea Ammon told MEPs on the Environment and Fitness Assessment Committee.

In addition, he also suggested to Member States to develop virtual and cutting-edge solutions, which are necessary for touch search and tracking.

EU ambassadors discussed on Wednesday a proposal, on concepts of the German PRESIDENCy of the EU, which includes a non-unusual approach to epidemiological threats and the ‘color code’ of threat areas, as well as a technique not unusual for measures on return to travel. – such as testing and quarantine.

Earlier this year, the European Commission created the “ReOpen-EU” to inform citizens about restrictions in other EU countries.

In recent weeks, the number of coronavirus infections in the EU has increased significantly in some Member States.

Spain, Luxembourg, France, Croatia and Malta have lately had the rate of new Covid-19 infections in the EU, followed by Romania, Austria and the Czech Republic.

“While many countries are lately mild and asymptomatic cases, which has led to a build-up of case reports, there is a genuine resurgence of cases in several countries due to the easing of physical distance measures,” the European Viral Alert Agency said in its most recent threat assessment.
