A positive attitude in Sheffield-based Mechan has helped keep the railway industry on the path of the coronavirus pandemic.

The railway depot apparatus specialists continued to operate at full capacity during the shutdown, providing essential assistance for the maintenance facilities, ensuring that the trains were available to key workers.

During the six months of April to September this year, Mechan engineers made 212 service visits to rail depots across the UK and beyond, and a team member spent 4 weeks in Egypt to fulfill the company’s commitments to the Cairo metro.

Maintaining this service consistency required significant adjustments to Mechan’s operating procedures. Site visits will now have to adhere to strict measures of social distance and sanitation, while those made during the closure should be coordinated with the nearest engineer, as the hotels were not. This accumulation of travel times, which has had an impact on the working day and, in many cases, has lengthened operating hours.

Lindsey Mills, Mechan’s sales manager, said: “If we hadn’t continued to paint the closure, the depots wouldn’t have been able to serve the trains, which would create potential headaches to update those that aren’t in service. using local products and suppliers, where possible, we have not found any inventory clutter caused by the pandemic, allowing us to keep our products internally and our partners operating without unnecessary downtime. This was essential for the degrees of continuity, we achieved and it was highly appreciated by our customers.

Covid-19 not only had an effect on on-site teams, but also at Mechan. La most staff have been working since the end of March, which is helping the company reduce its role. Depfinishent and factory adjustments have also been made to facilitate social distance, with the paintings now being finished through the same agent from start to finish.
