Matildas star scores Olympico’s hot goal, Kerr scores ahead of massive clash with Sweden

All-star trio Matildas Sam Kerr, Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord are set for Australia’s clash against Sweden in Melbourne on Saturday with targets for their English women’s Super League teams.

Arsenal teammates Foord and Catley discovered the back of the net when the Gunners maintained their best start to the season with a 4-0 win over Leicester City, Catley scored directly from a corner.

Matildas captain Kerr also got it right and was given a hand in the way for Chelsea in the Blues’ 3-1 win over unbeaten Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village.

Arsenal and Chelsea have 18 problems, the Gunners have played one game less.

Three other Matildas, Mary Fowler, Hayley Raso and Alanna Kennedy, also enjoyed the good fortune of the weekend when fourth-placed Manchester City beat Reading 3-0. Fowler took his first hand of the season for City.

Meanwhile, in Sweden, six Matildas (Clare Polkinghorne, Katrina Gorry, Charlotte Grant, Elise Kellond-Knight, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Courtney Nevin) took over the clash between Vittsjo GIK and Hammarby.

And it was Kellond-Knight, Cooney-Cross and Nevin who emerged with the right to brag after Hammarby hit back with the aim of winning 2-1.

Experienced midfielder Kellond-Knight, who returned to Matildas’ squad for the first time since last year’s Olympics for the match against Sweden and Tuesday’s clash against Thailand in Gosford, has signed with Melbourne Victory for next season’s women’s A-League.

“I’m excited to be back in the A-League with Melbourne Victory and the team wins its third championship in a row,” said Kellond-Knight.
