Massachusetts city uses COVID relief money to pay for 10 turkey statues

BROOKLINE – There is no hiding the fact that one Massachusetts town has faced its fair share of turkey troubles.

They have been known to take over sidewalks, front yards, and even fall from trees in Brookline. Yes, that’s one thing.

“I didn’t realize they were sleeping in the trees, so I was walking home at night and they fell. At 2 a. m. , when you’re walking home after a long day of work, it’s terrifying. Turks own trees Brookline We live there,” said Meaghan Murphy.

Earlier this month, the city announced that it would take on turkey by creating ten oversized fiberglass turkey art installations and pounding them in popular areas.

Brookline’s “Turkeys Around Town Initiative” is part of a bigger push to create more public art.

The city says its Brookline Art Makes Community program is a result of the American Rescue Plan and that it will use the COVID investment for public art projects and lead that operation.

The town is asking for the public’s input on themes for the turkeys and proposed locations.

The City plans to install turkeys this spring and the others in the fall.

Currently, they are accepting programs from local artists who need to contribute to the design and representation of birds. The city has announced that it plans to pay $1,000 to the artist.

“I think it’s a cool, fun idea,” Murphy said. “You need anything that inherently lives in Brookline and is inherently distinct from the other people who live in Brookline’s life and provides you with a laughable energy. “

“I love it and I think it’s cute,” Victoria Simons said. “Turkeys are what make Brookline what it is. The pandemic has taught us that other people outdoors are healthier, that it’s smart to be outdoors. “and that anything that brings other people together in contact and outdoors will only be smart and healthy. “

Artist applications are open until March 29.
