90% of Yemen’s food, fuel and medicine are imported. Almost two-thirds of the population is food insecure. Eighty percent need humanitarian assistance. Supplies have increased but are insufficient since the first ceasefire in April this year. With the investment shortfalls of the United Nations World Food Programme, mass starvation is likely to worsen in Yemen.
The World Organisation Against Torture report states: “The blockade will have to end without delay and completely, ending a fragile and lengthy peace process” and that studies of the Saudi blockade on shipments of origin “have not led to any weapons discoveries”.
The Saudis continue to inflict suffering on Yemen and its civilians through the extravagant support of the US military. For over 7 years, your tax money and mine have provided the Saudi/UAE coalition with US personnel, US-made warplanes. U. S. and recommendations for coalition airstrikes in Yemen. The 3 countries have the duty of those movements that violate foreign standards, adding the UN Convention that opposes Torture.
Prior to the summer recess of Congress, our Senators Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy introduced the Yemen War Powers Act with Senator Elizabeth Warren. Representative Peter Welch, one of the original co-sponsors of the House. I thank you for your paintings of those resolutions, which are supported through a wide range of legislators. Activists and organizations from more than 30 countries are also calling for an end to U. S. complicity. U. S. in the unconstitutional war. Peace in Yemen would be a momentous event. It has a chance if our country stops American involvement. Congress and President Joe Biden have the equipment they need to do this. Pass Yemen’s War Powers Act now.
