CAZENOVIA — On March 22, Marquardt Switches Inc. announced plans to move its operations from its North American headquarters at 2711 Rt. 20 East, Cazenovia, to its plant in Irapuato, Mexico, due to economic difficulties.
Some service, sales and progression work, such as aircraft manufacturing, will remain at the Route 20 site.
Founded in 1981, Marquardt’s North American headquarters is a 115,000-square-foot production facility that specializes in the production of electromechanical and electronic switches, controls, and switching systems for industries, as well as appliances, automotive, electromobility, off-road, and appliances.
Although Marquardt Switches has a post office in Cazenovia, the facility is across town from Nelson.
In a March 22 press release, Marquardt said his goal is to complete all planned relocation activities by mid-2025.
By the end of the transition period, around 180 jobs are expected to be affected by the relocation. Approximately 60 jobs will be impacted at the Route 20 facility.
In accordance with federal and state requirements, all affected workers will receive advance notice, according to Marquardt.
“We deeply regret the lack of such measures at the Cazenovia site and are committed to supporting affected workers in those changes,” he said.
The company explained that the offshoring of production is “urgently necessary” to ensure that its competitiveness is maintained.
Factors that contributed to this solution include persistently low order levels, the effect of the coronavirus pandemic, geopolitical tensions, wars, and emerging material, energy, and personnel costs.
“Despite significant efforts and investments to mitigate these challenges, we have not achieved the required sales increase,” the press release explains. “In terms of medium- and long-term forecasts, our business research has also shown that we will not be able to achieve sufficiently sustained and attractive expansion at the Cazenovia site in the coming years. “
On March 25, Traci Anelli, Marquardt’s director of marketing and communications in the U. S. , announced that she would be able to find a solution to the company’s website. At this point, the company would consider any statements in addition to the press release that issued the move.
“I was very saddened to hear today’s announcement about Marquardt, as they have been a staple of our most important net paints for the past four decades,” Cazenovia City Supervisor Kyle Reger said March 22. “This will have a significant effect on our region, with the number of jobs that will be lost, especially in the wake of the closure of Cazenovia College. Marquardt has been an excellent netpainting spouse in many tactics over the years. With this news, it is imperative that we continue to collaborative Paintings at the local, regional, and state levels to facilitate the economic progress of our region.
Nelson Town manager Jim Cunningham described the announcement of the first reduction as painful and unsettling, noting that building the company required decades of hard work and that many netpaintings members have connections to other people who work at the facility.
“Finding staff today has been a [challenge],” Cunningham said. “Demand for professional staff continued to outstrip supply. It is very difficult to perceive the recent trend of global corporations moving their production from the United States to countries close to the coast. Low rates of hard work have caused Ford, GM, and many other major automakers to reposition themselves to remain competitive in the global marketplace. I think we’re all involved in making this happen in this country as well. To thrive, we want to have communities with economic vitality.
He added that Marquardt has been a great partner to Nelson and Cazenovia over the years, and he hopes the company will explain why to expand its existing services on Route 20.
“Our domain in central New York is an incredibly safe position to start a business, with abundant resources such as clean, safe water, adequate transportation systems, and top-notch public services,” Cunningham continued. “I have personally worked in the highest number of countries around the world, including Mexico, where public services and infrastructure are not comparable. We want to invest in technical education systems to help fill new jobs at corporations like Micron, [which] invests in central New York State. What better position than Cazenovia College?[for] an educational center focused on the courses that Marquardt, Micron, and similar brands need?Large corporations like Marquardt have been helping communities in Central New York for decades. I thank Marquardt for many good years [in which] we have provided our communities with quality jobs, and I wish a long and rich future to all the talented staff involved.
