HAPSMobile Inc. (HAPSMobile) of SoftBank Corp. , and Alphabets Loon LLC (Loon) today announced that they have successfully verified their communications payload jointly developed in the stratosphere at HAPSMobiles Sunglider, a solar-powered unmanned aircraft (UAS) formula. The Sungliders’ first stratospheric control flight at Spaceport America (SpA) in New Mexico on September 21, MT, marked the world’s first successful delivery of LTE connectivity from a high-wing autonomous high-wing aircraft (HAPS) in the stratosphere.
The payload prepared for the stratosphere used in the verification flight was the first of its kind for an aircraft-based autonomous fixed-wing HAPS to provide LTE connectivity. With MIMO technology, payload allowed LTE connectivity to be delivered frequently for approximately 15 hours during payload worked as expected in non-easy stratosphere situations, where wind speeds reached more than 58 knots (about 30 meters consistent with the second) and constant temperatures were as low as -73 degrees Celsius.
During verification, the communication payload allowed a video call between Loon members and AeroVironment, Inc. team members. (AeroVironment) with smartphones on SpA and HAPSMobile team members in Tokio. La verification formula consisted of a Sunglider service link at 700MHz The spectrum band (LTE Band28) and a connection link between the aircraft and a floor link the millimeter wave spectrum. Because radio waves emitted and won through Sunglider operate on the same frequencies as existing smartphones and devices, SpA’s Loon and AeroVironment members were able to use regular smartphones to participate in video calling. During the verification flight, elegant operations and connection speeds enabled high-definition, low-latency video calls.
The service link used a five MHz band of the 700 MHz spectrum band for this verification. In addition to an outdoor environment, the video call was a hit inside.
Vint Cerf, identified as one of the Internet’s parents and vice president and chief Internet evangelist, Google, LLC, and Jun Muraiknown as the Internet father in Japan and professor at Keio University’s School of Environmental Studies and Information and HAPSMobile The External Directorate also joined the video call and the importance of HAPS for the future.
The flight images can be viewed here.
During the verification flight, HAPSMobile also made reference measurements of the knowledge of stratospheric ground radius propagation to be used for long-term contributions to the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) for foreign standardization. Thanks to the valuable knowledge and classes accumulated through the Groups In this check, HAPSMobile and Loon will work together with ITU, 3GPP, regulators and telecommunication operators to delve into the frames that are already underway on HAPS. The check also provided more information on how HAPS can sometimes be used in a crisis and in conjunction with other rescue technologies.
Junichi Miyakawa, Director of Representative and Technical Director of SoftBank Corp. , and also President and CEO of HAPSMobile, said: I am very pleased that our wireless communications device evolved together with Loon has exceeded our expectations in severe high altitude conditions. , we have received important knowledge that will drive the progression of advertising facilities and the policy and quality of our HAPS connectivity. We look forward to increasing the additional payload with Loon so we can revolutionize cellular connectivity and close the global virtual gap.
Loons CEO Alastair Westgarth said: “This success test represents a new step in creating a new layer of connectivity founded in the stratosphere. It is also a step in our ongoing strategic partnership with HAPSMobile. By developing technologies to take advantage of the opportunities of the stratosphere, we are moving toward our unusual purpose of connecting disconnected and poorly connected populations around the world.
Vint Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, said: “I had the privilege of participating on a historic occasion on September 21. A solar-powered HAPSMobile Sunglider aircraft flew more than 62,000 feet with a Loon LTE base station. The stratospheric base station connected a cell phone to the Internet, where a four-way high-resolution videoconference took place. Video call participants were in New Mexico, Tokyo, Mountain View, California and Washington, DC. promise for the long term of connectivity, that is, as a component of efforts to make the Internet bigger for companies that don’t already have it.
Jun Murai, professor at Keio University’s Faculty of Environmental and Information Studies, and also external director of HAPSMobile, said: The use of the stratosphere for cellular Internet will be the next cutting-edge ultimate challenge, and will be charged to the existing one. and I learned inventions from the Internet. I had the honor of participating in this historical web videoconferencing check between several issues using HAPSMobiles Sunglider, which was flying in the stratosphere. The result was a great success, leaving very strong impressions on all with high-resolution Video, fluid and virtually latency-free, allowing exciting and herbal conversations. The generation of HAPS is much needed for all of us to recover from an herbal crisis and the inclusion of the Internet, which are now key Internet missions. The Internet is for everyone, for everything and everywhere. Now we are moving forward to realize this dream.
