Manistee County records one new death from COVID-19 and 17 new cases

MANISTEE COUNTY — Manistee County recorded 17 new COVID-19 cases and one new death since Sept. 13, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. 

This is an increase of 593 new cases and 13 new deaths reported since Feb. 28. 

Manistee County has had a total of 3,213 cases of COVID-19 and 81 deaths. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated COVID-19 Community Level tool shows the risk for new cases in Manistee County is at a low level. Other counties in the region are at a low COVID-19 community level with Benzie, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties listed at a law COVID-19 community level as of Sept. 12. 

The CDC updates the community level maps once a week, with Sep. 15 being the most recent.

As of June 21, MDHHS is providing COVID-19 updates weekly on Tuesdays.

Here are some quick COVID-19 facts from the most recent MDHHS report:

• There have been over 2.82 million probable and confirmed cases and 38,464 confirmed and probable deaths statewide during the pandemic. MDHHS has updated its COVID-19 reporting to include confirmed and probable cases and deaths, instead of only confirmed cases and deaths.

• This is an increase of 16,901 confirmed and probable cases and an increase of 147 confirmed and probable deaths since Sept. 13. 

• Wexford County reported 6,028 cases and 107 deaths. This is an increase of 32 new cases and no new deaths. 

• Benzie County has seen 2,806 cases and 64 deaths. This is an increase of three new cases and no new deaths.

• Mason County has seen 7,135 cases and 98 deaths. This is an increase of 33 new cases and no new deaths.

Manistee County is considered part of Region 7 for tracking by the state. Region 7 includes Manistee and 17 other counties.

The region has 32 adults who have had suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the hospital, none on a ventilator and seven adult intensive care unit patients who have been confirmed or suspected to have had COVID-19. 

Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital has two COVID-19 patients, according to the most recent data available from MDHHS. 

Manistee County has 61% of its population completely vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the state’s data from Sep. 3, the most recent available data. This is 14,985 out of 24,558 eligible residents, according to 2020 U.S. Census estimates for people 5 years old and older.

In Benzie County, about 65% of the residents are fully vaccinated. 

Parents and guardians can schedule an appointment to vaccinate their children aged 6 months and over from COVID-19 through District Health Department #10 at dhd10.org/schedule. According to DHD#10, only the Pfizer vaccine is currently available at its clinics. The Moderna vaccine will be available at a later date.

DHD#10 is offering off-site vaccine clinics. Participants do not need an appointment. All clinics will have Pfizer for people 6 months and older and most will have Moderna and Johnson & Johnson for those 18 and older.

The health department is also scheduling third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for anyone age 12 or older; to schedule an appointment, visit dhd10.org/schedule.

The U.S. has the highest counts globally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been about 95.4 million cases in the United States and just over 1.048 million deaths.

The World Health Organization lists over 609.8 million confirmed cases and about 6.5 million deaths in the world. There have been about 12.61 billion vaccine doses administered worldwide.
