Singapore: A 64-year-old man of Indian origin has been jailed for two weeks in Singapore for intentionally coughing on colleagues while infected with Covid-19 in 2021, according to a news report.
Tamilselvam Ramaiya, who worked as a cleaner, pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of violating COVID-19 regulations by failing to wear a mask covering his nose and mouth while outdoors at his home, Channel News Asia reported.
The court heard that after showing up at the paintings on the morning of October 18, 2021, he told the deputy logistics manager that he was not feeling well and asked for an antigen test to be taken immediately.
After testing positive for COVID-19, he asked to return home, but Tamilselvam went to the company’s logistics workplace to inform the deputy logistics director about the result of his COVID-19 check.
Tamilselvam entered the workplace for a corporate reason that he was unaware of the positive test result.
The first victim, a 40-year-old logistics manager who knew Tamilselvam’s test result, told the driver to approach him.
The manager also asked him to leave and made a gesture imitating his expulsion.
Tamilselvam walked to the door but turned around and coughed twice with his mask on, the newspaper said, adding that his every move was caught on the CCTV camera set up in the Array.
The manager closed the door, but Tamilselvam opened it. He pulled down his mask to uncover his nose and mouth and coughed a third time before leaving.
As Tamilselvam was leaving, he walked past a window with a 56-year-old dialysis worker on the other side of the glass of the logistics office.
Although none of them contracted COVID-19 as a result of the incident, the company’s deputy director of logistics filed a police report following the incident.
During the investigation, Tamilselvam said he coughed at his colleagues as a “joke. “He said he did not take the positive result of his screening seriously and went to the polyclinic to check if he had COVID-19.
Calling for a sentence of 3 to 4 weeks in prison for Tamilselvam, Assistant Prosecutor Sruthi Boppana said the incident was “no laughing. “
He said Tamilselvam disobeyed explicit orders to leave the facility and instead intentionally coughed up his colleagues again at a time when Singapore is experiencing a new wave of COVID-19 cases.
For disobeying COVID-19 regulations, Tamilselvam could have been jailed for up to six months and fined up to S$10,000, or both.
