A man in his 20s was arrested in northern France after breaking into a railway zone, the French government said on Monday, as police continue to search for arsonists who sabotaged the exercise’s signaling cables last week, causing chaos. before the Paris Olympic Games. .
The Paris prosecutor’s office, at the pace of the investigation into these arson attacks, said that the detainee is not a suspect in these incidents.
Gérald Darguyin, France’s interior minister, described him as an “ultra-left” activist but did not give his name. He was detained on Sunday at a site belonging to the French National Railway Company, the S. N. C. F. , near the city of Rouen, the government said.
The French maritime transport and security government has stepped up its surveillance of the maritime network after last week’s sabotage, in which arsonists cut and set fire to cables at three signalling stations across the country.
Since the attack, the government has deployed around 1,000 railway workers, 250 railway security officers, 50 drones and several police helicopters to monitor France’s vast railway network.
Darmanin cautioned that it was too early to say what motivated the attacks, but said last week’s arson was the “traditional approach to action” of far-left anarchist or anti-capitalist teams. These teams oppose the French state and see the railway network. as one of its symbols.
