I grew up in South Paris, Maine, and I can tell you that of all the intersections in Maine, mine has the one that can be the most confusing and damaging unless I know it very well.
This is what the market square looked like a hundred years ago.
And what it looks like today.
It doesn’t make much difference in a hundred years, but the traffic is much heavier than it was in the days of horse-drawn carriages.
Market Square is where Routes 26 and 117 split, and Highway 117 merges with Highway 119. Still confused? Highway 26 heads west from Bethel and Highways 117 and 119 head east from Turner.
Here’s the kicker. Traffic comes from 3 directions into the plaza at the same location, and drivers entering from the south on Highway 26 are the only ones who need to stop. Having grown up here, it all makes sense to me, but a lot of drivers spoil it.
Luckily, comedian Donny Pelletier has a fun instruction about the market for you that he posted on his Instagram. Maine’s most no-nonsense athlete explains to you, as only a real Mainer crossing south of Paris to Sunday River explains how to get around the square. But pay attention carefully. You may also need to take some notes.
Donny Pelletier is Maine’s Olympic ski tycoon Troy Murphy, who finished fourth in the men’s tycoon festival at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Donny is his personal ego. Troy has rarely been seen since Donny blew up on social media. You can’t have more Maine than with a call like Donny Pelletier.
