Magnitude 5. 8 earthquake hits Guatemala, unreported

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) – A magnitude 5. 8 earthquake struck Guatemala late on Friday, the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, with no injuries reported.

The USGS said the epicenter was located less than 11 kilometers from the municipality of Masagua, near Guatemala’s southern coast. It was located at a depth of 61. 89 miles (99. 6 kilometers) below the Earth’s surface.

Guatemala’s CONRED news company was quick to report on the damage caused by the earthquake. Authorities in neighboring Central America El Salvador, where the quake was also felt, have not issued a tsunami warning.

Previously, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center had assessed the quake at a magnitude of 5. 5.
