Madrid sees curfew to curb coronavirus contagion

MADRID – The Madrid region is evaluating whether a curfew would be needed in the Spanish capital to curb a new wave of coronavirus contagion in one of Europe’s hot spots, the region’s most sensitive fitness official said on Tuesday.

“The curfew would allow . . . that at certain times there is no mobility, as France has done for example,” Enrique Ruiz Escudero said in an interview with Spanish news firm Europa Press on Tuesday.

French President Emmanuel Macron last week ordered a curfew in Paris and 8 major cities, starting at nine o’clock at night. until 6 a. m.

Escudero said the regional government in Madrid does not have the prerogatives to enforce a curfew, adding that they ask the central government to take the measure (Report via Inti Landauro edited through Ingrid Melander).
