Lora Victorio ascended, Beto Álvarez and Ben Brasil join the Newsroom

The following announcement sent on behalf of associate editor Shelby Grad:

I’m excited to announce leadership adjustments and new members for News Desk, which manages the Los Angeles Times’ homepage, mobile, apps, and other virtual platforms.

Lora Victorio was promoted to editor-in-chief of News Desk, overseeing the department. Victorio is a Times veteran who brings a strong judgment on news, cutting-edge ideas, and a collaborative technique for working. He’s been in the midst of much of our peak vital journalism, from elections and wildfires to the Jan. 6 awards ceremonies and Hollywood. It has also helped launch many special projects, adding award-winning surveys, podcasts, and reader service innovations.

Victorio joined the Times in 2006 to help publish The Envelope online. In 2011, he joined News Desk to help oversee the homepage. She became interim editor of news desk in 2020 and set out to communicate between departments, create a conduit for taking on virtual projects and assistance projects such as the podcast “The Times” and the American series from California. He also oversaw the digitization of a Pulitzer Prize-winning series about the Latino network in 1984, breathing new life into those life stories. Recently, he effectively led the changes to the design of the homepage.

Prior to The Times, Victorio worked as an editor at the Hollywood Reporter and as an editor at ABC News, where she was part of a team that won a Peabody Award for its policy on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Beto Alvarez joined the Times as associate editor of the News Desk after a successful career overseeing the virtual operations of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Most recently, Máximo served as Director of Digital Creativity for Photography, Video, Audio and Graphics at our spouse’s newspaper, where he has served since 2010. He also served as an administrator and oversaw the virtual design and publication of www. sandiegouniontribune. com.

Álvarez has worked in journalism for more than 25 years. He began his career at the Dallas Morning News, where he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator. He then spent 8 years at the Philadelphia Inquirer as a graphic designer, illustrator and designer. Throughout his career, Álvarez has won awards from the Society of News Design, the Society of Professional Journalists, Print magazine and the Malofiej Infographic Awards. He has also received 4 regional Emmy Awards.

He will work intensively with the two associate editors, Dan Watson and Henry Chu.

Finally, Benjamin Brasil joined the News Desk as a cross-platform editor.

Brazil works with the evening and weekend shift, helping with the latest news and special projects. As the homepage editor, it helps coordinate news policy and enhances our signature storytelling.

He first joined the paper in 2016 as a reporter for the Daily Pilot before running as news editor for TimesOC and co-writing the TimesOC newsletter. Brazil earned her bachelor’s degree in anthropology from UC Berkeley. It began on July 13.
