Washington, Sep 24 (IANS) The symptoms of prolonged covid are changing the meaning of “disabled” for Americans, an American media reported this week.
In an article titled “Prolonged covid will replace the way we communicate about disability”, the “saberes” said that the prevalence of prolonged covid has caused some to lose taste or smell, while many others affected are permanently disabled.
The article added that prolonged covid symptoms come with severe fatigue, palpitations in the center, constant ringing in the ears, chronic foot pain, and difficulty swallowing, among others.
“It’s a disability that only sufferers can explain,” one patient said.
Long Covid, or post-Covid syndrome, affected nearly one in five Americans who had Covid, he said, mentioning the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as cited through the report by news firm Xinhua.
Sara Fergenson, a social and rural public health advocate in West Virginia, called for “a verbal exchange about normalizing what disability means. “
If the definition of “disabled” is expanded to include long-term covid patients, the medical network, as well as other public resources, can offer more assistance to those who have noticed that their lives have been disrupted by covid-19, the report says.
