President Muhammadu Buhari expressed optimism that African countries could overcome the coronavirus pandemic, just as they have eliminated the wild polio virus on the continent.
President Buhari declared on Tuesday the official certification of the eradication of the wild polio virus in the African region as the virtual consultation of the 70th Regional Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa, at the Government House of Abuja.
The president in a statement through his special media and advertising adviser, Chief Femi Adesina, said: “I do not forget that in a time after accepting the job in May 2015, I promised Nigerians not to be begging a country where polio is my successor.
“This certification is therefore the non-public compliance with this commitment only for Nigerians and for all Africans.
“At a time when the global network is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, this achievement reinforces my confidence that with political will, investment and strategies, as well as citizen participation, we will flatten the epidemic curve.
I can affirm the commitment of all African leaders to this course of action. He trusted the global network that Nigeria would maintain momentum and take advantage of lessons learned from polio eradication in its fitness system, i. e. number one physical care, and prioritize the safety of fitness.
He added that Nigeria had knowledge systems, network participation and cutting-edge generation to monitor and polio outbreaks are expected.
According to him, the same equipment and equipment are being used to combat COVID-19 and multinational poliovirus epidemics derived from circulating vaccines.
Buhari, who described the achievement as a historic moment indeed, congratulated President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and the President of the African Union, under which Africa crossed the final line.
He said the adventure to eliminate the virus dates back to 1996 when Nelson Mandela, from the blessed memory, introduced the Kick Polio crusade outside Africa.
The Nigerian leader took the opportunity to congratulate Dr Matshidiso Moeti and the WHO Regional Committee for Africa on their tireless efforts, contributions and leadership in polio eradication in Africa.
He said: “We will have to jealously keep this achievement of eliminating Africa’s wild polio virus and making sure we take all mandatory measures to prevent them from resurgence of this dreaded disease.
“This will require maintaining the quality of surveillance and maintaining population immunity by expanding the policy of immunization regimes and more immunization activities.
“It is encouraging to see how the strong partnership between the Global Poliomyelitis Eradication Initiative and the governments of African countries has worked tirelessly and collaboratively to achieve this success. “
The president also praised decades of hard work and resistance from fitness staff and volunteers in the region, fitness ministers, and other stakeholders, such as political, traditional, devoted, and networked leaders who provided mandatory leadership.
“I would also like to thank our donors, progress partners and locals such as WHO, UNICEF, Rotary International, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Aliko Dangote Foundation, the U. S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, GAVI, USAID, the European Union, the Emeka Offor Foundation, the governments of Japan and Germany, many NGOs and religious organizations.
“It was the heroes and heroines of many battles that made us succeed in the war against polio,” he said.
While stressing the desire to immunize young people in Africa, the president suggested that African governments continue to invest in the fitness sector because “shaped populations create rich nations. “
“We will have to continue to build an acceptance among government institutions, leaders, and citizens so that we can unite like others and face the socioeconomic fitness and demand situations we face together. “
In his comments, Foundation President Aliko Dangote and leading African philanthropist Aliko Dangote suggested that African governments increase their budget allocations for the fitness sector, in order to contribute to the fundamental care of fitness for the population.
It expressed its deep satisfaction at the definitive eradication of wild polio in Nigeria and, through extension, Africa after years of hard work and collaboration among stakeholders.
Dangote, who has played a leading role through his Foundation in Polio Eradication in Nigeria, said: “I want to congratulate our African leaders, especially my own President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria for his leadership.
“All degrees of government have been effectively combined to make this day possible. “
