“Let’s combine to separate our differences”: Full text by Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar at the Bahrain Forum

It is all because Allah. La peace and blessings of Allaah be upon our Master, Prophet Muhammad, his associates and his family.

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, may be God to you, Dear Brother Pope Francis, Head of the Catholic Church,

ladies and gentlemen

Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon you all!

I would like to begin my remarks by expressing my sincere thanks to His Majesty King Hamad and his honourable other friends, the other inhabitants of the Kingdom of Bahrain, for inviting me to participate in this wonderful and outstanding forum entitled “East and West for the Coexistence of Humanity”.

It is a historic forum as it brings together highly reputable academics, sensible leaders, intellectuals, politicians and media personalities from East and West. Therefore, it deserves to go down in history and have its comments and recommendations proudly recorded in approved letters, as it comes as a timely reaction to the demanding fashion situations that have manifested themselves across the barriers of time and place.

For reasons of location, the forum is held in the Kingdom of Bahrain, whose history is proudly explained through its noble other people who have loved diversity and acceptance of others, regardless of differences of race, creed, idea or culture. Heritage has given the other peoples of Bahrain a special capacity to welcome civilizations and cultures in a spirit of discussion and encounter. They have transformed the most productive facets of those civilizations into a source of artistic power that promotes social stability and constructive social development.

As for the moment that makes this collecting and its fellow human beings a necessity and a lifeline, the cruelty of our world opposed to humanity has been further aggravated by the violation of the highest fundamental human rights to the minimum security for life and the preservation of its innate human being. to be the nature that God has bestowed upon him.

In fact, man’s emotions have become absolutely due to the falsification of his knowledge and awareness and distraction through the satisfaction of his instincts, rather than gathering the demands of his soul, emotions and consciousness. In fact, these latter needs are no less vital than the demands of the body. The fulfillment of those non-secular desires is more vital and even indispensable because they are the key to the inner balance, stability, and peace of every person’s brain, regardless of how they were raised, where and when they live.

Distinguished audience,

I do not think it is to repeat the discourse about the disagreement that huguyity is experiencing today, whether in the East or in the West, nor to look for the reasons for this disagreement, its tragedies or its bitter repercussions that afflict the type of the twenty. As you all know very well, these are wars, bloodshed, destruction, riots, orphans, widowhood, poverty, mourning, immigration, displacement and long-term concern where uncertainty and constant worry prevail.

As such, the picture has become too bleak to think there is hope, yet once we begin to contemplate the explanation for all those tragedies, we soon realize that it is the “absence of justice. “It is the law that God created to ensure the stability of society and maintain the balance that is missing in man’s life, that is, between his body and his soul. When such divine law is not observed, the order of the global total and nature is disturbed.

Not to mention those who have fallen victim to market economic policies, such as greed that generates an exaggerated preference for owning and consuming, the heavy and lethal arms industry, and arms exports to Third World countries. to make the arms industry flourish, fueling sectarian and racial strife and provoking sedition and conflict, resulting in the instability of nations that were once safe and secure.

In fact, the stories of our pain and suffering are so that one can quietly yield to the pessimism, sadness and hopelessness of a world where peace and coexistence deserve to prevail; a global where cooperation and goodwill deserve to be the maximum vital characteristics; A global where war deserves to be an exception. How can such hope be learned on our planet where only 1% of the population owns part of the global wealth, with only another hundred people owning more wealth than four billion of their peers?

What makes the scenario even worse is the fact that those tragedies and calamities are backed by philosophical theories that have a truth in Western society, absorbed through Western consciousness. Peoples. Obvious examples of such theories come with “The Clash of Civilizations,” “The End of History,” and “Globalization. “

All these colonialist and imperialist theories pave the way for a new global formula that controls peoples and nations. Just a few days ago, we heard through a senior European official, who described Europe as an idyllic ‘garden’ of prosperity and the rest of the global as a ‘jungle’. Such irresponsible people only show a great ignorance of the civilizations of the East and their history, which goes back more than five thousand years, not just three or four hundred years.

Most of the fears of today’s Easterners about the West are also shared by prominent and elite Western thinkers, leaders, and leaders. Some believe that Western policy is useless in the face of foreign crises. politics. I advocate the replacement of politics by culture in the field of external relations. The latter has the ability to perceive man and surround other aspects, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual or emotional. (1)

I will have to stress that I am not too pessimistic; nor have I lost hope that relations between West and East will soon be restored, with the status quo of integration and mutual cooperation, as borders dissolve and unity is achieved, where the isolation between West and East of the last century ends, as well as depending on each other for a new relationship, founded on cooperation, stability and security, with a just peace for all.

Perhaps it would be correct to say that the West desires the wisdom of the East, its religions and the ethical values on which its other peoples were raised, as well as its balanced view of man, the universe and our Creator. He desires the espiritualidad. de the East and his profound meditation on reality, so as not to be blinded by putting the ephemeral before the eternal. It is true that “not all that glitters is gold,” as the old saying goes. The West wants Eastern markets and its factories in Africa, Asia and elsewhere. It also desires the raw fabrics discovered inside those two continents, without which the West can produce nothing. It is neither right nor right to praise benevolence with poverty, ignorance, and disease.

And the same can be said of the East, because it will have to adopt the Western generation and use it for its technological and economic development, as well as import industrial, medical, defense and other products from Western markets. Easterners want a new look at the West, full of equity and charity. They also want a tolerant understanding of Western civil manners and customs, interpreting them through the prism of specific circumstances, advances and responses for which the West has paid a heavy price for many centuries.

Muslim scholars continue to highlight what Islam holds in terms of noble ideals, human brotherhood and cooperation, and other commonalities on which West and East agree and are welcome. Also, be diligent in presenting true Islam to Westerners (5).

It is noteworthy that many Muslims emigrated and settled in the West, forming an inseparable component of its social fabric. Many facets of Western life have been transferred to the Easterners, dominating their traditions, customs and fashions. This influenced a vital component of his mind and perspectives, including the curricula and his way of thinking. And there is much more, paving the way or leading to a new dating with balanced civilizations retaining their respective cultures, characteristics and differences, without any cultural domination or conformity through war and the systematic destruction inherent in the clash of civilizations.

This was taken up through the fashionable philosopher Tzvetan Todorov in The Fear of Barbarians. He states in his book: “Western culture deserves not to be portrayed as the only civilized society and as the norm for judging other cultures. Any interference with other cultures is an abuse of power. Freedom and equality cannot be instituted by force, otherwise we threaten to fit indistinguishable from those we call “barbarians. ” (2)

Dear participants,

There is now an Eastern Islamic theory that replaces the “clash of civilizations” theory, known as “civilizational wisdom,” which has attracted the interest of prominent thinkers and scholars in recent times. He reacted to the theory of the “clash of civilizations” by selling openness to the other aspect and wisdom of each aspect with the other within the framework of cooperation and mutual benefit, so that God’s goal may be to achieve, which is to populate the Earth, to achieve prosperity and avoid corruption in all. its forms

This theory is based on the word “Ta’aaruf” (Knowledge) as discovered in the Qur’an as an explanation of valid global relations between nations and peoples. It is based on 3 basic principles of the Qur’an:

First: The Qur’an states a concrete fact, known to all, that Allah has made other people different in terms of race, color, language, faith and other characteristics. They will remain different in those facets until the end of time. Almighty God said, “And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; However, they will remain different. “(The Qur’an, 11:118)

Second: The extra Qur’an states, on the basis of the first precept, that man was created loose and able to decide on his beliefs, religion, ideology and doctrine. This fact is based on the above precept because, while it is natural for others people to have other beliefs, it follows that they deserve to be free to decide on any religion. God says, “There will be no compulsion in [the acceptance of] religion. The right path is transparent from the wrong one. ” an, 2:256) God also said to His Prophet, “Then, [O Muhammad], would you force other people to be believers?”(The Qur’an, 10:99)

Third: Knowing that the Qur’an establishes the two past principles, that other people are others and that they possess freedom of belief, what is courtship between other people according to the philosophy of the Qur’an?The only way for this dating to the paintings is through knowledge, which is the path that Allah has established for interactions and dating between other people. This is obviously stated in the Qur’an: “O men, because we created you from men and women and turned you into other people and tribes so that you would know each other. Certainly, the noblest of you before Allah is the most virtuous among you. Verily, Allah is omniscient and omniscient. ” (The Qur’an, 49:13)

The third principle, logically derived from the previous two, can be formulated as the rule: quotations among other people established in the Qur’an are of peace and knowledge. Therefore, the Qur’anic norms governing human relations are logically enumerated without the option of reinterpretation or distortion. Natural differences require freedom of belief, which in turn implies non-violent courtship between other people.

I hope you will not tire of the persistent affirmations that Islam is a faith of peace and equality. What is said and promoted from time to time about the establishment of war in Islam against the infidels is false and turns into blatant lies about Islam and life. of his Prophet, although some followers of the same faith affirm it, a faith that is in evidence and evidence. It is not about ambiguity and lies.

A final grade:

I welcome and congratulate the name of this vital forum for discussion between East and West and its importance for collective human lifestyles. However, I recognize the difficult situations facing our modern world and the threats to human lifestyles and the stability of nations. Because of my gratitude and appreciation, as a human being, because of the gravity of such complex crises, I first call on devout scholars and thinkers to do more to teach young people about those undeniable facts about devout commonalities. Adapt to fashionable educational curricula to teach and convince young people that in the eyes of devout philosophy there is room in life for those of other religions, races, colors and languages, and that cultural diversity enriches civilization and establishes the missing peace.

I make a further call to my brother Muslim scholars all over the world from each and every doctrine, sect and school of ideas to hold an Islamic discussion, a discussion on circular unity, team spirit and reproach , a discussion about the Islamic brotherhood, no department, discord. and, more particularly, sectarian conflicts. The emphasis deserves to be on commonalities and meeting points, with an understanding of differences. Let us together expel all hate speech, provocation and excommunication and separate old and new conflicts in all their bureaucracy and with all their negative ramifications. I address, with a loving heart to all, this special appeal to our Shia Muslim brothers. I reiterate that the leading scholars of Al Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders and I are in a position to organize a similar assembly with open centers and outstretched hands, so that we can sit together at a circular table to separate our differences and our Islamic unity. in positions that are known to be pragmatic and serve the purposes of Islam and its law, which prohibits Muslims from giving in to calls for department and fragmentation.

We will have to be careful not to fall into the trap of compromising the stability of homelands and exploiting faith to stoke the fire of nationalist and ideological sentiments, not to mention interference in countries and their sovereignty or the theft of their lands. I am convinced that, if we have good will and determination, we can create a civil style that values Islam and Muslims as this faith deserves, a faith that demands of its followers, before others, fair treatment.

In this instance to welcome the discussion between East and West for the sake of human coexistence, I end my voice to all who seek peace and good. I also call for an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war to save the lives of other innocents. people who have nothing to do with this violent tragedy. I ask you to get up

The flag of peace, not victory, and go down to discuss and negotiate. Indeed, I call for an end to all ongoing fighting on Earth or at least a prolonged truce, to rebuild bridges of discussion, understanding and trust, and to identify peace in a world full of wounds. The choice has more serious consequences for the peoples of both East and West.

Thank you for your attention and possibly God’s peace and blessings be with you all!
